Astronomy Study Program – ITB

The Astronomy Study Program at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), alongside other departments such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and the Master's Program in Actuarial and Computational Sciences. The roots of astronomy at ITB are closely tied to the establishment of the Bosscha Observatory in 1923, which laid the foundation for astronomical research and education in Indonesia. The formal beginning of the Astronomy Study Program was marked by the appointment of G.B. van Albada as Professor of Astronomy in 1951.

Today, the Faculty offers a comprehensive academic pathway in astronomy, encompassing Undergraduate, Master's, and Doctoral programs. Astronomy itself is a dynamic and rapidly evolving scientific discipline. Given Indonesia’s unique geographical advantages, there is a significant need to develop qualified human resources who can actively contribute to global astronomical research and technological advancement. In the modern scientific landscape, collaboration and international networking play a crucial role. The Astronomy Study Program at ITB maintains extensive partnerships with institutions and research centers around the world, ensuring that its academic community remains connected to the forefront of astronomical discoveries.
