Academic and Research Facilities
1. Library and Student Discussion Area
A dedicated astronomy library and student discussion rooms support learning through access to literature and collaborative academic work.
2. Computation Laboratory
Designed for data analysis, simulation, and modeling, this lab supports coursework and research activities requiring computational resources.
3. Shared Access to Advanced Laboratories
Students and researchers have access to interdisciplinary laboratories across the ITB campus and other collaborators.
Observational and Instrumentation Facilities
Bosscha Observatory (Lembang)
Located approximately 15 km north of Bandung at an elevation of 1,310 meters, Bosscha Observatory is a historic and active observatory that plays a central role in observational training for students.
- Zeiss Double Refractor (60 cm) – Historic primary instrument for visual and photographic observations
- Schmidt Bima Sakti Telescope (71 cm) – Wide-field imaging and survey telescope
- Bamberg Refractor (37 cm) – Educational and photometric use
- Unitron and GOTO Telescopes – Smaller refractors for basic observational training
- Spectroscopic and Photometric Equipment – For hands-on practice in data acquisition and reduction
Students use these instruments in observational astronomy courses involving photometry, spectroscopy, astrometry, and night-sky imaging. The activities are designed to enhance technical skills, scientific planning, and collaborative learning.
VGOS Radio Telescope
A major enhancement to Indonesia’s astronomical infrastructure is the VGOS Radio Telescope (VLBI Global Observing System), currently under development in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology and international partners.
- Function: The VGOS telescope is part of a global array of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio observatories. It enables millimeter-precision geodesy, studies of Earth’s rotation, and supports radio astronomy observations, including quasars, AGN, and galactic structure.
- Impact: The telescope will support research, education, and international collaboration, allowing Indonesian students and scientists to participate in cutting-edge global radio astronomy networks.
